Around 50,000 people are released from prison every year, often with just a plastic bag of belongings and nowhere to go.
Switchback’s evidence, and wider research, is clear that supportive relationships are key to enabling people leaving prison to build stable lives away from crime. But the young men we support tell us that people first need the basic means to survive: access to housing, technology and finance. Without these bare essentials, people can’t move forward.
That’s why we are calling for three urgent actions to support prison leavers and enable people to make a new start:
- Guarantee accommodation on release
- Provide basic smartphones when needed
- Add shopping vouchers and a travelcard to the new Subsistence Payment
